Bridging the Gap Between Field Impact and Global Capital

The Africa Fair Seaweed Finance Facility (AFSFF) is a blended finance vehicle designed to expand equitable access to capital and climate-resilient technology for small-scale seaweed farmers — predominantly women — across East Africa.

Led by Action For Ocean (AFO) and Mawimbi Ocean Innovations, AFSFF launched in May 2024 with a USD 200,000 feasibility grant from Convergence Blended Finance — validating a 1:125 leverage model.

Theory of Change
  1. Women seaweed farmers form or join VSLA groups
  2. VSLAs reach 25% of financial targets → AFSFF matches savings 1:1
  3. Equipment financing (SFaaS) enables transition to deep-water farming
  4. Guaranteed purchase agreements eliminate price risk at harvest
  5. VSLA groups become self-sufficient within 2 years

Before AFSFF, I harvested from two lines and earned barely enough for school fees. Now I have twelve lines, my own drying racks, and I chair our VSLA group of twenty-two women.
